J.M. Smucker plans to sell cookie brand

ORRVILLE, Ohio – J.M. Smucker Co. in Orrville, Ohio, led this week’s mergers and acquisitions in Northeast Ohio with the proposed sale of its Voortman cookie brand to Second Nature Brands for $305 million in cash.

The transaction includes Voortman trademarks and the company’s leased manufacturing facility in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Smucker said in a statement. About 300 employees also will move with the business.

Smucker, which bought Voortman a year ago along with other Hostess Brands, said it was divesting the Canadian cookie brand in its ongoing commitment to optimize its portfolio, reallocate resources to its core growth brands and advance its leadership in the sweet baked goods category.
