Jailed for 4 weeks for making a false police report

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 7 – Magistrate Hajah Normazdina binti Haji Mohd Maskub today sentenced a Bangladeshi man, Saha Alom, 37, to four weeks in prison after he pleaded guilty to filing a false police report.

However, the Magistrate, taking into account the time Alom spent in remand custody, considered his sentence to be complete.

The court heard from Prosecuting Officer Atikah Husaini that the defendant, an assistant project manager at a company, filed a report at the Bandar Seri Begawan Police Station, claiming he was attacked by three men, two Bangladeshis and one Bruneian, and robbed of $3,600.

The incident allegedly took place at Alom’s residence in Kampung Katok B. According to his initial statement, three men who claimed to be immigration officers knocked on his door late in the evening of February 25.

Alom stated that after confirming with his employer, he opened the door, where the men entered his house.

He claimed one of them took his wallet by force, while the other, armed with a stick, attacked him. He further claimed that the Bruneian man stole $3,600 from his wallet during the attack.

The Royal Brunei Police Force takes the matter seriously and conducts a thorough investigation. The alleged suspect has been detained as part of the investigation. However, after further investigation, the police found that no such incident took place.

On February 29, Alom admitted to fabricating the story and giving a false account to the authorities.

Courts take into account the gravity of the offense and the resources expended on the falsified claim. Alom, having spent sufficient time in custody, is deemed to have completed his sentence.
