The topic is current: dealing with fake news in election campaigns. Six journalists will report on their research on the topic at the Reporter Slam on Wednesday, September 11th, and compete for the audience’s favor in an entertaining live journalism show: who can best present their own report and captivate the audience?
For the first time, the Reporter Slam – after stops in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and South Africa – is visiting Potsdam. The event begins at 8 p.m. in the Spartacus in the open air.
Initiative from Potsdam
Initiator Jochen Markett had long planned to hold a reporter slam in Potsdam, because this is where the organizer Headliner gUG is based. “The reporter slam has been around since 2016,” says the trained journalist and media trainer, who started the format as a hobby. “I was always looking for ways to combine journalism with entertainment,” he says. Before 2016, there were many poetry slams and science slams, but no journalism on stage.
He now organizes six Reporter Slams per year. Other formats are “Get well soon – the show for constructive journalism” and “Jive”, a magazine on stage with orchestral music and journalistic lectures. “We want to promote live journalism extensively in Germany,” says Markett, who will moderate the evening in Potsdam.
Ten minutes, six shows
The slam in Potsdam marks the conclusion of the M100 Young European Journalists Workshop 2024, a multi-day seminar for 20 young journalists from all over Europe, which is taking place for the 20th time as part of the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium media conference.
The workshop in the super election year will focus on disinformation in election campaigns, its detection and combating in everyday journalistic work. In two internal semi-finals, six young reporters will be selected for the show at Spartacus.

They will report on their journalistic work in English; a German translation is available on their mobile phones. Each person gets ten minutes to speak and can support the show with photos, videos or music. At the end, the audience chooses who has won and who qualifies for the next Reporter Slam annual final in Berlin.
The evening will be accompanied musically by the show band “Bommi & Brummi”. Tickets cost from 9.35 euros and are available online at Ticket platform “Tix for Gigs” and available at the box office.
