The Staaken Center: a small shopping center since the 1970s, once located on the outskirts of West Berlin. The GDR wall was not far away. Many Spandau residents have very special memories of this place.

The Head of the open-air cinema from the old town, Julia Colm, grew up here and remembers quaint pubs, ice cream shops and a very special drugstore. The Makers behind the Staaken Center, Kutbettin Eroglu spent his youth here. And Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, CDU, can still remember this place exactly. They all tell their very personal stories in the Spandau newsletter of the Tagesspiegel.

“Here in the Staaken Center I have the nose flattened“, said Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, CDU, as we both stood on Magistratsweg, where the new Berlin Citizens’ Office went into operationThe shopping center opened in 1974, when Wegner was two years old and still living in Hakenfelde. So why were you here, Mr. Wegner?
