VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (KSNW)—To raise public safety awareness, extra patrols are being set up across the region’s railroads.
It’s called “Operation Clear Track,” and it’s part of a larger program called Operation Lifesaver, which began in 1972. It is the single largest rail safety law-enforcement initiative in North America.
Officers urge people not to trespass on railroad property or use it as a shortcut to where they’re going.
“We’ve started to see more death and injury with trespassers over the last several years than we had with motor vehicles,” said Captain Matthew Vogt with the Valley Center Police Department.
Officers in El Dorado and Rose Hill will be conducting safety awareness events on Thursday, Sept. 26.
They will be handing out safety information passing through those areas as well.
