Kansas state troopers warn of scammers targeting crash victims

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — The Kansas Highway Patrol is warning Kansans about scammers who use publicly available crash data to target people who appear to be at fault.

On Friday, Oct. 11, the KHP warned of scammers posing as law enforcement and attempting to get money using scare tactics. The KHP said the scammers may threaten victims with arrest.

“Attempts have also been made to obtain banking details,” the KHP wrote on social media. “They are using information from publicly available online crash data to obtain personal contact information and crash details.”

The KHP reminds Kansans that state troopers will never request money or banking information from people to avoid arrest or other penalties. There have been no reports in Kansas, but the KHP asked residents to be aware and contact law enforcement if something similar happens to them.
