The summer holidays are over, but summer is not yet here – and you might think that the Potsdam event organizers have been waiting for this. There are numerous events at the weekend that are aimed especially at families.

Kite festival in the Volkspark

Giant flying animals, sleek combat kites and delicate paper creations will take to the air in the Volkspark on Saturday and Sunday. The kite festival is one of one of the established names in Potsdamas autumn approaches. For the 35th edition, kite artists from all over Germany, but also from England, the Netherlands and Poland will bring their works and perform them. In addition to the aerial program, spectators can see puppet shows and acrobatics on the stage, there are bouncy castles and hands-on activities. It is open on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission costs 6 euros, and 3 euros for children aged five and over.

Give and take at the star

The district festival at Stern on Johannes-Kepler-Platz starts on Saturday with the city’s give and take market. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., discarded but well-preserved clothing, books or toys can be exchanged, given away or taken away. Items brought along can be dropped off from 10 a.m. The district festival starts with its program at 2 p.m. There will be live music and performances all afternoon, including the Sweet Memory Cheerleaders and Samba meets Stern on stage.

Fire brigade opens the doors

What to do in the event of a grease explosion? Visitors can find out at the Potsdam Fire Department’s open day on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the fire department, police and aid organizations will be showing their vehicles and performing various exercises on the grounds in Holzmarktstrasse. A diving container will also be on display on the grounds of the Waterways and Shipping Authority, and anyone who wants to can ride on a police boat. Admission is free.

The Potsdam municipal waste disposal company (Step) will also be opening the gates of its depot at the same time on Saturday. Here, guests can look at the vehicles and equipment used for garbage collection and street cleaning, and there will be arts and crafts activities and music.

Culture for everyone

Music for breakfast, clowns and dancing, all with free admission: At the seventh edition of “Culture for Everyone”, Potsdam residents can choose between events at 19 locations in the city on Sunday. Many of the program items are aimed specifically at families and children. It starts with breakfast from 10 a.m.: In the Kaiser Friedrich Church there is an open family breakfast with a board game and at the Marie Juchacz elementary school the students present a circus program for the intercultural breakfast. Later in the day, children can laugh at the clowns Pipo and Pipolina at the Awo cultural center at 11 a.m., make an animated film in the film museum and take a selfie with “Bernd, the Bread” or watch the juggler Ferdinand Freudensprung at the family center in the Bisamkiez from 2 p.m. Admission is also free in many museums.

Forge your own nails

Anyone who wants to try their hand at blacksmithing can try their hand at hammer and anvil on the blacksmithing day at the “Blauer Daumen” adventure playground, In der Aue 63. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., children between the ages of eight and 14 can forge nails, hooks and arrowheads under supervision. Admission is free.
