NEW YORK, OCT 9 – Lebanon is ‘on the brink of a massive war’, but there is still time to stop it, said United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres yesterday.
Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres said the Middle East ‘is in a very tense and unstable situation’.
“I have been warning for months about the risk of the conflict spreading,” the UN chief said, adding that the situation in the occupied West Bank was ‘escalating’, and that attacks in Lebanon threatened the entire region.
He said that in recent days, the exchange of fire between Hezbollah and other parties in Lebanon with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has increased along the Blue Line, regardless of Security Council resolutions 1701 and 1559. – Xinhua
