Lidl unveils plans for new €200m Cork distribution centre

Lidl unveils plans for new €200m Cork distribution centre

German supermarket chain Lidl is seeking planning permission to construct a €200m regional distribution centre in Little Island in Cork, which is expected to come on stream by 2030.

The company said the new facility would enhance its logistical infrastructure to support its expansion plans in the South and South-East of the country.

This will be the German retailer’s second distribution centre based in Cork — it opened its facility in Charleville in 2008. It will be its fourth distribution centre in Ireland.

The project is subject to planning approval.

Speaking of the company’s expansion plans, Lidl’s regional managing director for Munster Tara O’Connor said it was looking to make a “significant investment to futureproof our logistical infrastructure” with this new distribution centre.

“Our ambitious expansion plans to increase our store footprint across Munster and the South-East region over the next five years are well under way, with new stores set to welcome customers over the coming months,” she said.

Lidl currently has 180 stores across the Republic of Ireland, of which 22 are in Cork.

A new Lidl store is due to open in Ballysimon, Limerick, in early 2025 and there are plans in place for six further stores in the across the rest of the Munster.
