Lin-Manuel Miranda unleashes “Warrors” and 11 more things you must listen to this weekend

Lin-Manuel Miranda unleashes “Warrors” and 11 more things you must listen to this weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Lin-Manuel Miranda returns with his latest, out-of-the-box project, leading a week of new music releases that brings us the first MC5 album in more than five decades, a holiday set from Jennifer Hudson, a new album from Joe Jonas, a collaboration between ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and Mick Fleetwood and other fresh works by Lil Durk, Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, Joy Oladokun and the Green Day spinoff Pinhead Gunpowder (all subject to change)…

Album of the Week — “Warriors” (Atlantic): We’ve become accustomed to Lin-Manuel Miranda raising eyebrows with his musical projects (“Hamilton,” anyone?), so we just kind of roll with the idea of a combination song and spoken-word recreation of the 1979 gangs of New York film “The Warriors” (which gave birth to Joe Walsh’s hit “In the City”). It’s certainly done by a formidable gang of creatives — Miranda teaming with Pulitzer Prize-finalist co-writer Eisa Davis on the material, Nas executive producing and a cast that includes Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Marc Anthony, Cam’Ron, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and Ghostface Killah and more. Not what you might expect — but that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

Jerry Cantrell, “I Want Blood” (Double J Music): The Alice in Chains guitarist has been easing his fifth solo album since mid-summer, a nine-track set that includes contributions from Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan, Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, Faith No More’s Mike Bordin and other musical friends.

Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird, “Buckingham Nicks” (Loma Vista): As the title indicates, the two indie fave singer-songwriters join forces for a track-by-track new interpretation of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks’ pre-Fleetwood Mac duo album from 1973.

Susanna Hoffs, “The Lost Record” (Baroque Folk): The best-known of the Bangles unearths a 10-song collection she wrote during the mid-90s and recorded in her garage in 1999 — all of which remained unreleased except “Under a Cloud,” which the Bangles released on its 2011 album “Sweetheart of the Sun.”

Jennifer Hudson, “The Gift of Love” (Interscope): The EGOT singer and talk show host’s first full album in 10 years is her first-ever holiday collection, featuring plenty of seasonal favorites and collaborations with Common and the South African a cappella quintet The Joy.

Lil Durk, “Deep Thoughts” (Alamo): The Chicago rapper is back with his ninth album, with three tracks already out as singles. The guest list is unconfirmed in front of its release, but among those rumored are Future, Rod Wave, Sabrina Carpenter and Morgan Wallen.

Joe Jonas, “Music For People Who Believe in Love” (Republic): After DNCE-ing on his own, the middle Jonas brother delivers his second solo album, advanced by two singles (“Work It Out” and “What This Could Be”) and inspired, he says, by fatherhood and family life.

MC5, “Heavy Lifting” (earMUSIC): The first album in 53 years under the newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ moniker is guitarist Wayne Kramer’s baby, though original drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson is on a couple of tracks. And the guest list — Slash, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, Tom Morello, Alice in Chain’s William Duvall and Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath — insures that this kicks out the jams.

Joy Oladokun, “Observations From a Crowded Room” (Amigo/Verve Forecast/Republic): The critically hailed singer-songwriter offers up a dozen very personal new songs and three spoken-word “Observation” interludes on her fifth album.

Pinhead Gunpowder, “Unit” (1-2-3-4 Go): The first full album in 27 years — and 14th release overall — from the punk quartet that includes Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Jason White.

Seventeen, “Spill the Feels” (Hybe/Pledis Entertainment): The K-pop boy band follows its Korean language compilation “17 Is Right Here” with its 12th mini-album, its six songs mostly in English, including a collaboration with DJ Khaled on “Love, Money, Fame.”

Jake Shimabukuro and Mick Fleetwood, “Blues Experience” (Forty Below): The ukulele virtuoso and Fleetwood Mac veteran, both residents of Hawaii, apply a unique touch to blues and pop favorites — including a rendition of the late Christine McVie’s “Songbird” with a spoken-word elegy by Fleetwood that will leave you in a puddle of tears.
