Lion cub at Schwerin Zoo is called Santosh

The almost two-month-old little lion from Schwerin Zoo has a name: His name is Santosh, as a zoo employee said. The male cat was born on July 31st and initially lived a secluded life with his mother Indie in the den and the adjacent stables.

Zoo friends decided on the name of the lion cub online. In addition to Santosh, which according to the zoo means “the lucky one” in Sanskrit, the other name available was Najuk, which means “the fine one” in Hindi. NDR 1 Radio MV had previously reported on this.

The lions in Schwerin Zoo are Asiatic lions. The species is said to be highly endangered. According to estimates, there are only 350 specimens left in the wild in India’s Gir National Park. The species was originally widespread as far as the Mediterranean region. The breeding in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s state capital is said to be part of the European conservation breeding program. The pack kept in Schwerin is the second largest in the world.
