In the search for the former RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg, the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) wants to publish previously unknown images of the wanted man. “Next week we will renew our public search,” said an LKA spokesman in Hanover in response to a dpa inquiry. A video and two screenshots from a second recording are to be published, which presumably show the wanted man. The investigators hoped this would provide new clues, said the LKA spokesman. “Spiegel” had initially reported on the matter.

The first video “very likely” came from Berlin, said the LKA spokesman. According to investigators, the screenshots are from a recording in Hildesheim. The police initially did not want to say when the recordings were made. The LKA spokesman referred to the planned publication.

It was also not initially known where exactly the recordings came from. The “Spiegel” newspaper reported that the recordings were secured after the arrest of RAF terrorist Daniela Klette. According to “Spiegel”, Garweg’s voice can also be heard in the video.

Manhunt for former RAF terrorists has been going on for years

Since 2015, the Verden public prosecutor’s office has been investigating Daniela Klette, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg for attempted murder and attempted and completed aggravated robbery in several cases. Klette was arrested in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the end of February.

The three belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist Red Army Faction (RAF). In 1998, the RAF, which killed more than 30 people, declared itself disbanded. At the beginning of July, investigators also used new photos to search for the former RAF terrorist Staub.

The Federal Criminal Police Office was searching for Garweg using, among other things, a photo that had been found in Klette’s apartment and showed him with two dogs. The investigators were already hot on the 56-year-old’s heels. Shortly after Klette’s arrest, they confiscated the trailer in Berlin-Friedrichshain in which Garweg had lived under the cover name Martin, according to the investigation.

In recent months, several people who were thought to be Garweg or Staub had been checked.
