Longtime soap opera star dies at age 70

LOS ANGELES, California — Drake Hogestyn, who appeared in nearly 4,300 episodes of the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died at the age of 70.

Hogestyn’s family announced his death in a post on social media.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the post says. “He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination.

“After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was the most amazing husband, father, papa and actor. … We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.”

Hogestyn portrayed John Black on the show for nearly 40 years, first appearing in 1986. Actors from the show paid tribute.

“When I heard the news about Drake Hogestyn’s passing I felt kicked in the gut,” Eileen Davidson, who portrayed Kristen DiMera on the show, said in a post on social media. “A truly one of a kind. So kind, hilarious & talented. Loved his family so much. I know he’s up there telling one of his many stories. Thanks for the laughs Drake. I’ll always love and miss you. XO.”

“I’ll always remember you as a Loving, Loving father, husband and Dear friend but mostly an incredible , passionate human being, generous and immensely kind,” Kristian Alfonso, who played both Hope Williams Brady and Princess Gina on the show, said on social media.

According to IMDB.com, Hogestyn twice won the Soap Opera Digest award as hottest male star. He also won an award with co-star Deidre Hall as favorite couple.

Hogestyn is survived by his wife, Victoria Ann Post, and four children.
