Lorain County boy, 9, dies after bicycle collides with Jeep, police say

ELYRIA, Ohio — A 9-year-old boy was killed and a 10-year-old boy was injured when the bicycles they were riding collided with a Jeep, police say.

Elyria Police Capt. James Welsh says in a news release that the incident occurred just before 6 p.m. Saturday on the 100 block of Burns Road. Welsh says the Jeep SUV was driving east on Burns Road and was trying to maneuver past the two boys, who were riding their bikes on the road.

Police say the bicyclists suddenly changed direction as the Jeep passed and collided with the vehicle. The 9-year-old boy died at the scene, while the 10-year-old was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Elyria Medical Center before being transferred to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland.

The identities of the boys have not been released and police have not updated the condition of the 10-year-old. The driver of the Jeep was not injured. Welsh said additional information will be released Monday.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors at this time.
