CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Lorain County school canceled in-person classes Wednesday because of threats of violence against students.

The Lorain County Joint Vocational School, located in Oberlin, is for students grades 9-12. According to the school’s Facebook page, Lorain County sheriff’s deputies informed the school about a threat related to a student over the social media app, Snapchat.

The school later discovered the threat came from outside of the county and was not related to a student. The school still decided to close on-campus operations as the threat was the second against a student within a week.

An investigation revealed the threat was unrelated to one from last week. In that case, the school received a threat on the campus related to a different student. Sheriff’s deputies are investigating both incidents.

“We take student safety seriously, and we took every necessary step to ensure that our students and staff remained safe,” according to a statement from the school’s social media page.

The school did not say when in-person classes will resume.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to the school’s administration for comment.

Other schools have closed this week over student safety. On Tuesday, Lorain High School and the Social Sciences Academy in Cleveland announced they canceled classes after threats were made on social media.

A 12-year-old who attends Lorain Schools sent a message over social media, threatening to “shoot up” Lorain High School, police said. When authorities tracked her location, she told officers she was “just joking.” She was charged in the county’s juvenile court with inducing panic.
