Lorain officer shoots robbery suspect after foot chase, police say

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Lorain police officer shot a robbery suspect who ran from officers early Monday, police say.

The shooting happened at 12:05 a.m. at a home in the 1300 block of West 17th Street. Officers received a report that a man had broken into a vehicle, and he possibly possessed a firearm, police said.

Police located the suspect in the driveway of the home. He then fled, police said. The chase ended when an officer fired several shots at the man, police said.

Paramedics transported him to Mercy Hospital of Lorain, where he is in stable condition. He faces several charges, including aggravated robbery. Police said others could be involved in the incident.

Police did not indicate how many times the man was shot. His identity has not been released.

No other injuries were reported during the incident.

Elyria police will investigate the shooting.

The incident comes after Medina County sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man during a traffic stop on Silvercreek Road on Saturday night. Sheriff’s deputies said the man had a firearm and was “threatening suicide by cop.”

Deputies also said they believed the man was headed to Wadsworth High School, where students were celebrating homecoming.

The man died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

State agents are investigating the shooting.
