Maintain manners while working in the office

Greetings to the assembly of authors and dear readers of this special column, allow me to share something that has been bothering my mind for the past two weeks, where in my office there is a group of young people who have recently been hired.

There is no denying that these young people are energetic, full of new ideas, more open and able to contribute towards the progress of our company. Understandably, the ideas of these young people can sometimes lead to innovation that we never expected. Maybe that’s one of the reasons my boss appreciates them.

But, to my surprise, sometimes your language is rude. Sometimes they don’t care about the workplace environment. There was a time when I heard them gossiping, talking about impolite things, as if they did not respect the people around them.

I feel uncomfortable when I hear words like that. It seems that my respect for them has decreased a little, because I am less confident with their attitude in the office.

I don’t know if they realize it’s wrong or not, or if they just don’t care. Could it be that they think others are not listening? Or maybe the other employees deliberately turned a deaf ear, trying not to see?

In fact, this workplace is a place where we should be professional. I always remember, these young people need to be more disciplined, take care of the conversation and know where they are.

As a result, we, as Bruneians, have been taught the value of courtesy since childhood. It’s different if they don’t follow the principles of Malay Islam Beraja that we are proud of. Furthermore, what we talk about reflects who we really are.

For the youth out there, I hope we both take care of our language, take care of our behavior.

Don’t let the way we speak make others lose respect. After all, they don’t know, if people don’t respect them, the chance to advance in their career will be affected.

If there are people who have felt the same, I hope to be able to share my opinion in this room – it’s not wrong to advise each other.

Thank you Insan Terkait for sharing with readers. Indeed, the attitude of a few who do not respect others with disrespectful speech can disturb our environment.

As said above, we should display a professional attitude while working by displaying quality work in addition to maintaining behavior including how to communicate with anyone while working.

However, if your co-workers say bad things or speak too loudly, it can definitely disrupt the company’s productivity to some extent and requires action. Among them, it is possible to use headphones or move to another workspace to reduce distractions.

Supervisors or more powerful parties can be invited to discuss this matter.

If the environment is feared to disrupt a positive atmosphere in the workplace, the responsible party should take action to maintain respect in the workplace environment.
