Man arrested after allegedly shooting at undercover cops

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Undercover Wichita Police officers were the target of gunfire Saturday.

The department says officers were conducting surveillance on a house in the 1400 block of North Grove in connection to recent armed robberies. Officers stopped a car that had left the home while another team continued to watch the house from their unmarked vehicle near 14th and Grove.

Wichita Police say a man approached that car, tried to look inside, and then turned back towards the house, talking to someone. A moment later, a man walked out of the house and allegedly fired a rifle at the officers.

The officers retreated to safety, and a perimeter was set up around the house. The man had fled back inside.

The SWAT and negotiation teams responded to the scene, and the man eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the daily dangers our officers face to keep our community
safe,” Police Chief Joe Sullivan said in a news release. “The brave men and women of the Wichita Police Department confront these threats head-on, often at great personal risk. We are committed to ensuring that the situation is resolved peacefully. I commend our officers’ professional response in the face of danger.”

Police say they recovered a rifle from inside the home but are still investigating the incident.
