Man charged with iron bar attack on busy Cork City centre street

Gardaí objected to bail for a man accused of striking another man across the head with an iron bar at 2pm in the afternoon on one of the main streets of Cork City.

Jamie Kavanagh, 30, of no fixed address and originally from Ballincollig, County Cork, is charged with having a metal bar and assault causing harm to another man at Grand Parade, Cork, on Tuesday, October 1.

Garda David Driscoll objected to bail being granted to the accused: “This occurred in the early afternoon on one of Cork City’s busiest streets and there was a large number of members of the public in the vicinity.

It was an incredibly violent incident that appeared to be unprovoked.

“It is utterly unacceptable that the people of Cork City are subject to such violence at two in the afternoon.”

Judge Philip O’Leary agreed that this was a serious alleged incident and refused bail, remanding Jamie Kavanagh in custody until October 9 to allow time for directions to be obtained from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The garda evidence was that the accused man said he did not know the other man. However, defence solicitor Eddie Burke said this was not just a random person on the street and that the two parties were known to each other and there was a dispute between them relating to narcotics.

Judge O’Leary said that whether they were known to each other or not the presence of gardaí and members of the public and the fact that it was in broad daylight did not stop the alleged attack occurring.

Garda Driscoll said: “Gardaí observed Jamie Kavanagh produce a metal bar and strike another male across the head with it. The male fled but was later met by gardaí and conveyed to hospital by ambulance for treatment for head injuries.

“Jamie Kavanagh was stopped nearby and still had the metal bar on him.”

Solicitor Eddie Burke said the defendant is from Ballincollig and he proposed that he would stay out of Cork City and stay away from intoxicants if granted bail.
