BEACHWOOD, Ohio —
Identity theft: Willow Lane
At 9:35 a.m. Oct. 1, a Beachwood man, 62, went to the police station to report that he had learned that two vehicles had been purchased in Texas using his identity. The purchaser of the two vehicles used his name, address, Social Security number and a driver’s license that included a photo.
Purchased were a 2021 Honda CR-V through a Capital One account, for $37,159, and a 2023 Acura RDX, through a Bank of America account, for $48,250.
The man received notice on Sept. 23 from Progressive Insurance of his policy insuring the two vehicles.
Beachwood police checked the vehicle registration number associated with the Honda CR-V and learned that it had subsequently, on Sept. 26, been reported stolen from Jefferson, La.
The man made fraud reports with Progressive and a credit bureau.
Crisis intervention: Eaton Boulevard
At 10:55 a.m. Oct. 1, police and EMS were summoned to Aloft Hotel, 1010 Eaton Blvd., where a woman was passed out in the lobby’s restroom. The woman was highly intoxicated and had a minor head injury.
She slurred her words and had to be helped to an ambulance, which took her to Ahuja Medical Center. The woman told police several times that she does not drink or use drugs.
She said she had been with a Cleveland Browns player, but only named him by his first name.
While in the ambulance, she finally identified herself to officers and went on to change her story. The woman, 29, said she woke up that morning at her Akron home feeling as though she had been drugged.
She next said that she had an argument with her child’s father, who punched her in the head. The woman next said that the man she had been with was 53 years old. An officer found that each time he would engage the woman, she would change her story.
The woman’s mother was called to the hospital and reluctantly told police that her daughter has substance abuse issues and would over indulge when drinking.
It was later found that the woman had been in contact with a man by the first name she had initially given, and that he had arranged for an Uber ride to take her from her home to the hotel. She had previously text-messaged the man asking about getting together for a sexual encounter.
She messaged the man from the hotel lobby, and the man, police found on her phone, had texted her back, presumably from the lobby, asking where she was.
Hotel staff found that the woman had left in the lobby a bag containing a bottle of wine and $500.
The woman and her mother refused to identify the child’s father. The identity of the man who supposedly paid for the Uber ride was also not learned.
It was unclear to police if the woman became impaired by her own means.
Police gave the woman a card and told her to call if she wanted to further discuss the matter.
Receiving stolen property: Park East Drive
At 7 p.m. Oct. 2, an automated license plate reader alerted police that a stolen 2020 Nissan Rogue had entered the city. An officer found the car, parked, with one occupant, in the lot of Embassy Suites hotel, 3775 Park East Drive.
Two police cars boxed in the Rogue in its parking spot. A man got out of the Rogue, looked at officers, and ran. Police gave chase on foot, but the suspect eluded capture by entering the building and running up steps. Officers from Pepper Pike, Lyndhurst and Orange also helped with the search.
Before he ran, the suspect dropped a paper bag he had held that contained two bottles of liquor and a cell phone. An ID card was in the cell phone holder. The suspect was identified as a Cleveland resident, 19.
It was learned that the suspect had been named as an “other involved party” in the theft of a car in Euclid. The stolen Nissan, however, was stolen from an East Cleveland man’s address.
Police are now seeking the suspect on charges of receiving stolen property and obstructing official business.
Bicycle rider injury: Shaker Boulevard
At 6:20 p.m. Oct. 5, police were called to Shaker Boulevard, near Richmond Road, where a bicyclist had been hit by a car.
The bike rider, a Shaker Heights man, 67, was taken to Hillcrest Hospital. The police report does not state if the motorist was cited.
Theft: Cedar Road
At 4:05 p.m. Oct. 6, loss prevention at Sephora at Beachwood Place reported seeing a woman, who was accompanied by her granddaughter, conceal in a Nordstrom bag a highlighter and makeup totaling $149.
The granddaughter made a purchase, but the grandmother made no attempt to pay for the goods in the bag.
Security apprehended the grandmother, 53, of Hudson, after she left the store. Police charged the woman with theft. She was issued a one-year mall ban.
