BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, OCT 22 – A 33-year-old local man was sentenced to 16 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing a fiberglass boat and its engine from a house in Kampung Sungai Matan, Jalan Kota Batu.

Nurul Furqan bin Awang Morshidi pleaded guilty to the charges last week.

Magistrate Hajah Normazdina binti Haji Mohd Maskub heard from Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli that Nurul Furqan, along with two others, committed theft between the evening of August 8 and the morning of August 9. Stolen items included a fiberglass boat and a 15HP engine, valued at $7,000.

According to the prosecution, the defendant and his comrades were fishing near Kampung Pelambaian when they noticed the unattended boat tied to a house. Acting with mutual intent, the defendant and one of his accomplices untied the boat and steered to Kampung Setia B. The defendant then admitted to selling the boat engine for $350, receiving $100 from the sale, while his accomplice took the remaining amount.

The investigation, which led to the defendant’s arrest, only recovered the stolen boat, while the engine remained untraceable. The defendant holds several previous convictions for property-related offences.
