MEDINA, Ohio – The city’s finance committee has approved the purchase of a security trailer with multiple camera capabilities for the police department.

Sgt. Darin Zaremba explained that the trailer is a self-contained unit that will fit inside a parking spot.

“It extends 25 feet in the air and up top are multiple types of cameras including Pan Tilt Zoom cameras, fixed cameras as well as license plate recognition and radar built into the unit,” he said.

Zaremba said he believes the unit will be very useful for the police department in multiple situations.

“I think it will be useful to have during events on Public Square and also at the fair,” he said. “We can pan, tilt and move around and the radar technology and license plate recognition can be useful for traffic complaints.”

Zaremba said the original cost of the unit was $60,000 but the vendor is offering a $20,000 discount and the city also has a grant that will cover $25,000.

“So the city’s portion of the cost will be just about $15,000,” he said.

In other news, council also approved legislation authorizing the mayor to advertise for bids and to award a contract for improvements to the hangar apron at the Medina Airport.

City Engineer Patrick Patton said the project would replace the pavement on the west side of the airport near the hangars.

“The pavement is failing and presents a danger to the aircraft,” he said.

Patton also said that $180,000 of the project will be paid for through American Rescue Plan Act funds.
