Medina seeks public feedback on downtown street resurfacing

MEDINA, Ohio – The city is coordinating with the Ohio Department of Transportation to resurface Court Street from Lafayette Road to approximately 300 feet north of West Homestead Street and they are also planning safety upgrades in the center of town.

As they prepare for this project, residents and business owners can view the proposed plans and offer feedback to the city. Plans can be viewed at http://medinaoh.org/news.

“We received approximately $902,000 from NOACA to help fund the resurfacing of Court Street or Route 42 through the town square,” City Engineer Patrick Patton said. “Also with this project, we are looking to add a safety element for pedestrians. We have been working with ODOT and they encouraged us to apply for some funding to help with the project. We did receive $500,000 to help make these improvements.”

The work to be completed includes localized partial and full depth pavement replacement, asphalt milling, asphalt resurfacing, sidewalk repair at existing curb ramps, localized curb replacement, ADA facility upgrades for each intersection, signal modifications for pedestrian buttons, drive approach replacement as needed and improved pavement markings.

The project will also include pedestrian bump outs extending the curb at each pedestrian crossing into Court Street and Broadway Street, between Washington Street and East Liberty Street, effectively making the pedestrian crossing shorter.

Construction is scheduled to begin after April 1, 2026, and be completed by Aug. 1, 2026. Right-of-Way acquisition will not be required for this project. Traffic will be maintained during construction, including pedestrian access, business access and residential access following ODOT standard construction drawings.

While the project cost won’t be officially determined until design work is completed, Patton said he estimates the entire project will cost between $1.6 million and $1.8 million, so the two grants are expected to cover the majority of the cost of the project.

Due to a number of accidents involving pedestrians in the area of the square, Patton said both the city and the state have been looking at options to enhance safety in the area.
