Medina Superintendent welcomes guests to new board meeting space

MEDINA, Ohio – The Medina Board of Education had their first official meeting in their new space Sept. 17 at the former Garfield Elementary School.

“I want to welcome everybody to our new board meeting space at the historic Garfield school,” Superintendent Aaron Sable said at the beginning of the meeting. “We are excited to have repurposed this facility to utilize space that has been much needed. It looks beautiful thanks to the maintenance department and custodial staff who put in a lot of effort into this project.”

Sable said the space that will now be used for board meetings was once the cafeteria at Garfield. He added that refurbishing the space was done at a minimal cost as school district staff added a fresh coat of paint and added banners that represent the district’s Portrait of a Bee.

“Probably the only real cost in transforming this room was new carpeting,” he said. “We used a local company for the installation. This will allow more people to be able to attend our meetings.”

Sable said the district’s professional development center is also located in the building.

“This also provides more space at our high school which I know they appreciate,” he said.

The transformation of the Garfield building was part of the district’s redistricting plan. The plan, which went into effect this school year, included the closure of Garfield and Heritage elementary schools.

Students who previously attended Garfield now attend either Blake or Northrop and students who previously attended Heritage now attend either Blake or Fenn.

The former Heritage Elementary School now houses the district’s preschool.
