Berlin’s SPD parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh has accused CDU leader and chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz of populism in the migration debate. Merz’s “tone and language unfortunately did not help to objectify the debate and bring society together,” said the parliamentary group leader in the Berlin House of Representatives in an interview with t-online.
Merz had spoken out in favor of a temporary, comprehensive rejection of all asylum seekers at Germany’s external borders. “He broke a lot of china there,” said Saleh. Simple populism is not enough to become chancellor. Immigrants are a part of Germany. At the same time, Saleh warned against uncontrolled immigration. What is missing is a real immigration concept.
