Maurer was reported missing after a hike in the Italian foothills of the Alps. The managing director of the Charité’s Institute for Allergy Research had set out from his holiday home in San Bartolomeo on Lake Maggiore on the morning of July 31 to climb Monte Giove.

According to his wife, Maurer wanted to be back at noon. When the doctor did not return by the evening, his wife alerted the emergency services.

Despite an intensive search, which reportedly involved rescue teams from the local fire brigade, mountain rescue and alpine specialists from the Soccorso Alpino della Guardia di Finanza, Maurer remained missing. The search lasted a total of four days before it was called off.

The professor had been on holiday in San Bartolomeo with his wife, daughter and brother. The family also privately searched for clues and offered a reward of 3,000 euros. A post, written in German, English and Italian, was found on Facebook.

The case is reminiscent of the Disappearance of British television presenter Michael MosleyThe 67-year-old BBC journalist disappeared in June while hiking on the Greek holiday island of Symi and was later found dead.
