Policy: The election started on 19 April and will be carried out in seven phases before the counting of votes begins on 4 June. Almost 1 billion people have the right to vote.

Modi is hoping for re-election to a third term in an election in which his Hindu nationalist party BJP is running against an alliance of more than 20 parties. The opinion polls indicate that he is likely to get a comfortable majority.

– I encourage all citizens to vote and celebrate the democracy festival. To everyone working in the heat, I urge you to take care of your health and drink enough water, Modi said shortly after casting his vote in his home state of Gujarat.

There he was surrounded by hundreds of supporters and party members, and he signed autographs and spoke to children on his way to the polling station.
