Morocco confirms first case of mpox

RABAT, SEPT 13 – Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection reported the first case of mpox in the southern city of Marrakech yesterday, Xinhua quoting a report from the official MAP news agency.

This is the first case reported in Morocco amid a new global outbreak.

According to the ministry, the patient is now in a stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment. Isolation and monitoring measures are implemented according to national and international health standards.

Epidemiological investigations are underway to trace all close contacts of the patient and there are no symptoms for all those close contacts so far, according to the report.

The ministry also urged the people to refer to official sources to get accurate information to avoid the spread of rumors and misinformation.

He also advised the public to practice preventive measures including frequent hand washing, avoiding direct contact with infected or suspected individuals, and maintaining personal hygiene.

On August 14, the World Health Organization declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a public health emergency of international concern, following the emergence of a more dangerous variant, clade 1b which was first detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo in September 2023. – Bernama
