For Elton John, family means more than his greatest successes. “Fame is a dangerous thing if you don’t have something else,” said the British singer at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) after the premiere of “Elton John: Never Too Late.”

The documentary, directed by RJ Cutler and David Furnish, John’s husband, is a deeply personal portrait of the singer. The film spans the preparations for John’s concert at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles in 1975 to his last concert in North America at the same venue in 2022.

In Toronto, the singer said that he would continue to make music despite the end of his touring career. “But my family comes first. Having them is the greatest feeling.”

At 77, he is having the best time of his life. “I don’t want my tombstone to say that he sold a million records. I just want it to say that he was a great father and a great husband,” John said.
