Cristiano Ronaldo has broken another impressive mark in world football. In the Nations League opener against Croatia, the 39-year-old superstar scored his 900th career goal. Portugal’s captain celebrated the 2-0 lead after 34 minutes with appropriate emotion. It was Ronaldo’s 131st goal in his 213th international match. No other footballer in the world has played more international matches and scored more goals in the national team jersey.

No end to career in sight

Before the match, Ronaldo had already announced that he was not thinking about the end of his national team career. “If I no longer have any added value, I will be the first to go,” he said. After the European Championship in Germany, “it never occurred to me that my cycle was over. On the contrary: it motivated me even more to carry on.”

At the European Championships, the five-time World Footballer of the Year was heavily criticized because, even at the age of 39, he still played as captain and regular player without making any noticeable contribution to the team in sporting terms.
