New information released in deadly officer-involved shooting northwest of Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita Police Department released new information on a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday in the 6900 block of Childs Street.

Wichita Police Chief Joseph Sullivan said that Jonathan Macias called 911, saying he was going to shoot people near 45th Street North and Ridge Road.

For about an hour, Macias drove around the neighborhood. He got out of his car several times and approached houses.

Sullivan said officers used spike strips to deflate his tires, but that didn’t stop the car. Macias eventually got out of the car, turned his body toward officers and reached behind his back.

“He put his right hand behind his back, leading law enforcement to believe he was reaching for a weapon,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said that’s when the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Maize Police Department, and Park City Police Department discharged firearms and less lethal bean bag rounds.

Officers rendered first aid, but Macias died on the scene.

Sullivan said they never found a weapon on or near Macias. The vest he was wearing was a carrier, but it didn’t have ballistic panels.

Investigators are still talking to witnesses and officers. If you live in the area near 45th and Childs and have not talked to investigators, call the Wichita Police Department at 316-268-4407.

Sullivan said the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
