The restaurant partners confirmed the construction of a new sandwich and ice cream shop in the former Isla’s Ice Cream location, 140 Lear Road, Avon Lake. Isla’s closed earlier this year.

This will be the third venture for the owners who opened Goonie’s Dog Shop a few months ago in the old Beach Park Station Oil House, formerly home to John’s Bait and Tackle Shop, 33473 Lake Road.

The name or opening date for the new restaurant has not been announced.

A new business opened last week in Avon Lake as Paper Crane Botanicals took over the space formerly occupied by Coffee and Chaos Boutique, 690 Avon Belden Rd Ste 1B.

The small business is owned by Bridget Murphy, a 2016 graduate of Bay High School.

“My business name comes from when I was a kid, my cousin/best friend and I spent a summer learning how to fold origami paper cranes,” said Murphy in an email. “She and I had shoe boxes full of them for a long time. I took inspiration from the comfort those memories brought me to my business in house plants, the hobby that has brought me comfort throughout my adult life.”

Inside Paper Crane Botanicals, customers will find house plants for everyone, from the beginners who “kill everything,” to the seasoned collectors with a green thumb.

“I have everything they need to care for their plants, as well as trendy pots and home decor,” said Murphy. “I have been more than happy to offer my advice and recommendations to add a little green to every space, no matter what skill level my customers are starting with. It’s easy to get discouraged when starting to care for plants, but with any new hobby, it just takes time and some practice to learn what works best for anyone.”

Murphy is happy to offer that advice to anyone who needs it.

“I started the same way as just about every other plant parent, I struggled and lost a lot of beautiful plants, but each time I learned something new,” she said. “I have taken all that knowledge and turned it around to my business, so hopefully I can help others learn from my mistakes.”

After graduating from high school, Murphy headed out west and worked in a large nursery in southern California.

“I really just fell into my job there, starting as a cashier, but worked my way into management, then to e-commerce and assistant buying. While I was there, I found my love for house plants, and did everything I could to talk to the specialists there and learn as much as I possibly could. After my time there, I moved to Washington state and continued my work in plant nurseries. I worked as a house plant buyer in Washington at a nursery that was just starting to add indoor plants to their generally outdoor nursery and did what I could do to grow that department.”

The experiences further enhanced her desire to run her own business, but it wasn’t until she had worked in those spaces that she knew one day it would be a house plant shop.

“It’s hard to start a business on the west coast, and it had been eight years since I was home to Ohio,” she said. I missed the sense of community that the Cleveland area has, unlike anywhere else I had been. I decided to move home, and with the help of my mom, found the perfect space in Avon Lake. Having grown up just one city over, I knew it was the right space for me. I am so lucky to have such a supportive community around me, and I couldn’t have done this without their support, as well as my family’s.”

Paper Crane Botanicals is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The shop is closed on Sundays. Follow on Facebook.
