The Dodgers

The Dodgers replicated their Game 1 performance with an 8-0 victory over the Mets in Game 3 on Wednesday, pulling them within two games from their first World Series berth since 2020.

Los Angeles hit three home runs while Dodgers pitching held the Mets to just four hits. Walker Buehler went four innings with six strikeouts while allowing three hits and two walks. It was his first shutout since May 18.

Los Angeles tallied 19 total bases while the Mets had just four.

Freddie Freeman continues his pain management on a badly sprained right ankle. He is a gametime decision. Gavin Lux, who is dealing with a sore hip, will likely not be in the starting lineup, but could be available in the depths of the evening.

Los Angeles has shutout their playoff opponents in four of their last five games.

Kike Hernandez continued his stifling play with a two-run home run in the sixth inning of Game 3. Hernandez’ October lore continues to grow, tying Babe Ruth with 15 home runs in his postseason career.

Shohei Ohtani walloped a three-run home run in the eighth, breaking the game open. Ohtani is 17-for-20 in his last 20 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Max Muncy has hit a home run in two consecutive games. He has at least one hit in all three games of the series and touts four RBI in the NLCS.

The Mets

As they have done time and time again this season, the Mets will have to channel another bounce back as they were shutout for the second time in the series.

New York mustered just four hits as Mark Vientos, Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte and Jose Iglesias found their way on base. The Mets had the bases loaded and failed to capitalize as they struck out twice.

The game was eerily similar to Game 1, which bodes well for the Mets’ counterpunch in Game 4. If they aren’t able to answer, they will be on the brink of elimination for the first time this postseason.

Mets players to watch

Mark Vientos has 15 hits in 10 postseason games. He has recorded six multi-hit games this postseason. Vientos smashed 27 home runs and 71 RBI in the regular season.

Francisco Lindor had an opportunity with the bases loaded in the second inning. He couldn’t capitalize, striking out to end the inning. Lindor has two home runs and seven RBI this postseason.

Pete Alonso has been a boom or bust this postseason. Alonso has struggled in the NLCS, tallying one hit, one run, two walks and four strikeouts. He has three home runs, six RBI and two stolen bases this postseason.

Today’s pitching matchup

(LA) Yoshinobu Yamamoto (1-0, 5.63 ERA) vs. (NY) Jose Quintana (0-0, 0.00)

Yamamoto was brilliant in the winner-take-all Game 5 against the Padres in the NLDS. He pitched five scoreless innings. He was also 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA in the regular season. It marks Yamamoto’s first road start in the postseason.

Los Angeles received reliable innings from former Chicago White Sox reliever Michael Kopech, Ryan Braiser and Blake Treinen. Kopech has not allowed a run in 4.1 innings this postseason. The trio is all expected to be available once again in Game 4.

Quintana has been nearly untouchable in his last eight starts, sporting a 0.57 ERA. He has yet to allow an earned run in the playoffs and has compiled 11 strikeouts in two appearances. He also touts a 0.82 WHIP. The Mets’ potent arm went 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA in the regular season.

New York used three innings out of Tylor Megill, which means he won’t be available. Everyone else is on standby in a pivotal Game 4, including David Peterson, Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton and closer Edwin Diaz.
