The Dodgers

The Dodgers were walloped early by a desperate Mets team. The response was strong, but they were forced to invite their NLCS foe back to LA.

Andy Pages homered twice while Mookie Betts went yard for the second time in as many nights. Los Angeles cut it as close to 10-6, but the middle-inning comeback fell flat.

The pressure shifts to Dodger Stadium where Los Angeles could be without first baseman Freddie Freeman as he continues to nurse a badly sprained right ankle. He is a gametime decision.

Another bullpen game, the style that has brought them this far, could be the catalyst to help them punch their first ticket to the World Series since the 2020 MLB triumph. A win would also give them their first NLCS Championship at Dodger Stadium for the first time in 36 years.

In League Championship history, with the 2-3-2 format, the team leading 3-2 heading into Game 6 has won the series 79 out of 114 times (69.3%).

Dodgers players to watch

Mookie Betts has recorded home runs in back-to-back games for the second time this postseason. He has tallied four home runs and 11 RBI while batting .300 with a 1.079 OPS.

Shohei Ohtani has been sensational in the NLCS. The phenom has two home runs, five RBI, seven runs and has drawn eight walks. Ohtani is batting .263 this postseason with a .917 OPS.

Max Muncy had a four-game hitting streak snapped in Game 5. He has notched two home runs and four RBI on five hits while also recording nine walks.

The Mets

With their backs against the wall, the Mets came out firing in Game 5. Pete Alonso jumpstarted the avalanche of runs with a three-run home run in the first inning as New York battered Dodgers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty.

Starling Marte recorded three doubles and three RBI. New York tacked on five more runs in the third and two more in the fourth, stretching the lead to 10-2 before the Dodgers attempt to climb out of the early hole.

None of the five games played in the series have been closer than four runs and the average run differential is seven. The Mets have won four straight games when scoring four or more runs.

The Mets are 4-3 on the road in the playoffs this season. A win would completely flip the series upside down to a winner-take-all Game 7 at Chavez Ravine.

Mets players to watch

Despite going 0-for-5 in Game 5, Mark Vientos has four home runs, 12 RBI, seven runs and 17 hits while batting .333 this postseason. He is their most dangerous bat.

Francisco Lindor has recorded back-to-back multi-hit games. He also touts one home run, two RBI, a triple and three walks in the series.

Starling Marte’s performance in Game 5 is the kind that can change a series. If he can replicate anything similar, it’s a massive boost for the Mets offense as they teeter on the brink. Marte has recorded two multi-hit games this series.

Today’s pitching matchup

(LA) TBD vs. (NY) Sean Manaea (2-0, 2.65 ERA)

Los Angeles will rely on the unpredictable bullpen game to try and punch their ticket to the Fall Classic. A starter has not yet been announced. Ryan Braiser has started both the Dodgers’ bullpen games in the postseason. Brent Honeywell captured 14 outs, keeping the Dodgers high-leverage relievers well rested as Game 6 came into fruition. Expect Blake Treinen, Evan Phillips and Michael Kopech to take the spotlight.

Once again facing elimination, the Mets turn to their best arm on five days rest. Manaea was solid in Game 2 against the Dodgers, holding their powerful lineup to two earned runs and two hits in five innings while also walking four. He touts three appearances this postseason with 17 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP.

The bullpen is depleted. Ryne Stanek (seven outs) and closer Edwin Diaz (six) were called upon for multiple innings in Game 5’s lopsided affair.
