Norris started pole position in S’pura, Verstappen second

BERLIN, SEPT 22 – Championship challenger Lando Norris from McLaren has won the pole position for the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix which will take place today, German news agency (dpa) reported.

Britain’s Norris, who is trying to topple world champion and position leader Max Verstappen, clocked one minute 29.525 seconds to overtake the Dutchman and claim his sixth career pole position.

Lewis Hamilton will start the race in third place after accelerating in the final seconds under the floodlights of the city’s street circuit.

While Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who won the race here from the pole position last season, was involved in an accident when he hit the wall causing the red flag to be waved.

He was not injured, but had to start the race from 10th place. The marshals rushed to remove his car to allow the qualifying session to continue.

McLaren has long been behind the competition, since Lewis Hamilton won the world title for the British team in 2008.- Bernama
