NZ airports limit goodbye hugs to 3 minutes

WELLINGTON, OCT 24 – Airports in New Zealand have set a three-minute limit on goodbye hugs, sparking a global debate about how long it’s appropriate to hug.

The management of Dunedin International Airport in the southern city of Dunedin did not expect the new rules in the car delivery zone to go viral around the world.

“To ensure smooth running, we have installed new signage including the ‘3 Minutes Maximum Hug Time’ board,” said the airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Daniel De Bono.

“It’s our way of adding a unique element and reminding people that this delivery zone is for a short break,” he added.

“And don’t worry a 20-second hug is enough to release oxytocin and serotonin, the happiness hormones that boost well-being, so three minutes is enough time to say goodbye and get your dose of happiness.”

For those who want a longer hug, they can use the car park, where parking charges are free for the first 15 minutes, De Bono said.

The time limit for the hug drew widespread attention and sparked a range of reactions online.

“I’m glad there is no minimum limit for hugs. Enough with ‘see you again’,” commented a woman on the airport’s Facebook page.

This is strange! Hugs are proven to have many benefits, including for mental health,” said another user.

The airport noted that the hug time limit rule was introduced in September without much reaction at first.

“We are just surprised by the global interest that has emerged,” said the airport’s Marketing and Communications Executive Officer, Sarah Soper. – AFP
