Oracle will invest US$6.5 billion in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, OCT 2 – Technology giant Oracle announced today that it plans to invest more than US$6.5 billion in cloud services data centers in Malaysia, joining the list of major US companies racing to build their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

The firm stated that this cloud region will help organizations in the country modernize their applications, move workloads to the cloud and innovate with data, analytics and AI.

Oracle is working to expand its cloud infrastructure business around the world. The company recently forecast that it will hit revenues of over US$100 billion in financial year 2029, driven by growing demand for cloud services.

The new cloud site in Malaysia will be the firm’s third in Southeast Asia, after two facilities in nearby Singapore.

“Malaysia offers a unique growth opportunity for organizations looking to accelerate their expansion with the latest digital technologies,” said Garrett Ilg, Oracle’s executive vice president for Japan and Asia Pacific, in a statement.

“Our multi-billion dollar investment confirms our commitment to Malaysia as a regional gateway for cloud infrastructure as well as a comprehensive suite of software-as-a-service applications implemented in Malaysia.”

The statement also quoted Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, as welcoming the investment, saying it will help companies with innovative and up-to-date AI and cloud technologies to improve their global competitiveness.

“Oracle’s decision to establish a public cloud area in Malaysia underscores Malaysia’s infrastructure readiness and its growing position as a leading destination in Southeast Asia for digital investment,” he added.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim yesterday announced that the country plans to develop a National Cloud Policy.

Anwar said the policy will focus on four main areas including improving innovation and efficiency of public services as well as strengthening user trust and data security. – AFP
