WESTLAKE, Ohio –

OVI crash: Dover Center

A caller at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 20 told officers that a car crashed on Dover Center Road at Ellington Road after driving off the road and striking a fire hydrant. Airbags deployed.

The female driver appeared lethargic but said she was not injured, according to a police department statement. The 44-year-old Bay Village resident said she may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The driver was field tested and arrested for OVI and failure to control.

Assault warrant: Crocker Road

The city’s automated license plate readers at 5 p.m. on Sept. 14 alerted police officers that a car belonging to someone wanted on a felony warrant from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office was driving along Crocker Road.

Westlake police officers stopped the car on Crocker Road near Union Street and arrested the driver, a 34-year-old Columbia Station man, on a felonious assault warrant. He was taken to the county jail.

OVI: I-90

A caller at 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 17 informed an officer that a Chevrolet pickup truck was weaving on I-90.

Officers stopped the vehicle traveling eastbound as it approached Clague Road. The officers noticed that the driver appeared to be intoxicated and had a can of Busch beer in the truck.

Officers administered field sobriety tests and then arrested the 62-year-old Cleveland man for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having an open container, and failing to drive within marked lanes. He refused to take a breath test, and officers added a charge of refusing a chemical test after prior OVI convictions. The man had eight prior OVI convictions since 1981, according to a police department press release.

He was released to a sober friend and his license was immediately suspended.

Reckless operation: Hilliard Boulevard

Police officers and firefighters responded at 8:45 p.m. on Sept. 17 to a report of a car striking a utility pole on Hilliard Boulevard near the Westlake Recreation Center. The pole was sheared in half and the BMW that struck it was heavily damaged.

The 21-year-old Rocky River male driver and his three occupants reported only minor injuries. The driver was cited for reckless operation and failure to control. The road was closed for several hours while the debris was cleared, and the pole repaired.

Menacing: Detroit Road

Officers responded at 10 p.m. on Sept. 17 to Chipotle Mexican Grill after employees reported that a customer threatened the staff after not being able to pay for the food prepared for him.

Officers found a man matching the suspect’s description walking at Crocker and Detroit roads. Witnesses said that after the man’s credit card was declined several times, he was not allowed to take the food. The man argued with employees and threatened to “beat” them. The 27-year-old Cleveland resident was arrested and charged with menacing.
