OVI suspect accused of laughing during field-sobriety tests: North Olmsted Police Blotter

NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio –

OVI: Lorain Road

An officer at 9:24 p.m. on Sept. 22 stopped an eastbound vehicle that had only low-level daytime running lights turned on and was weaving within its lane, according to a police report.

The Volkswagen Jetta driver slowed to 26 mph after the patrol cruiser pulled behind it but before the officer turned on his lights.

The officer noticed that the male driver had two open beer cans in a door pocket, smelled of an alcoholic beverage, had bloodshot eyes, and fumbled for his wallet. He laughed and interrupted the officer as the officer administered field sobriety tests, according to the police report. The driver also had trouble maintaining his balance.

He refused a breath alcohol test and had a previous OVI conviction. He was charged with OVI, refusing a breath test, driving without headlights, and failing to use turn signals.

A passenger in his car was taken to the police station and allowed to call a friend or relative to pick her up.

Shoplifting: Lorain Road

Officers at 10:36 a.m. on Sept. 27 responded to the Giant Eagle grocery store, where a loss prevention officer said she had taken into custody a suspected female shoplifter.

The store employee watched as the woman placed numerous groceries into reusable shopping bags, went to a self-checkout register, and only scanned and paid for a few items. She was stopped as she began to leave the store. The loss prevention officer recovered more than $114 worth of stolen items, according to the police report.

The suspect admitted to stealing the groceries, said it was a stupid mistake, and offered to pay for them. However, the store decided to charge the woman with petty theft by shoplifting, a misdemeanor.

Stolen auto: Country Club Boulevard

A resident of an apartment building on Country Club Boulevard contacted the police department shortly after noon on Sept. 28 to report her car was stolen from the parking lot.

The woman said she parked her 2020 Hyundai Elantra and locked it at 10 p.m. on Sept. 27. When she went to get into her car at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, the vehicle was missing.

An automated camera reader had spotted her stolen vehicle at Denison Avenue and I-71 southbound at 6:50 a.m. on Sept. 28, according to the police report.

Theft from auto: Great Northern Boulevard

A guest of the Aloft Hotel reported to police at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 28 that he discovered that someone had stolen the catalytic converter from his parked car overnight. The car was a rental vehicle, and the man did not have rental insurance.
