Carmen and Ramona Brussig are siblings, but are competing for different nations for the first time in the judo competitions at the Paralympic Games in Paris. Carmen was on the hunt for medals for Germany for a long time, but switched to the national association of the neighboring country in 2022 and made history with her qualification: she is the first judoka to take to the mat for Switzerland at the Paralympics.

“We are one heart and one soul,” said Ramona before the competitions about her relationship with her twin sister. “We are happy for each other when we compete – no matter which nation we are representing. Now she wears outfits in different colors than before, but we are still twins.”

Carmen, a trained pastry chef, said her passion for chocolate was the reason for her move. “I love it, especially white chocolate – with yoghurt and raspberries. That’s why I emigrated to the motherland of chocolate,” said Carmen, who has lived in Switzerland for 22 years.

However, the siblings will not be watching each other’s fights. “We simply can’t do that,” said Ramona Brussig, who will compete in the visually impaired athletes’ class (J2) up to 57 kilograms. Carmen will also compete on Thursday in the J2 class up to 48 kilograms.
