The curve run cost prosthetic sprinter Felix Streng the silver medal. The 29-year-old crossed the line of his lane three times in the 200-meter final. Even though the London-based athlete finished second, he immediately lost the medal due to the consequent disqualification. “That is extremely frustrating. I still haven’t really grasped it,” said Streng after his race.
Streng had a clear lead along with the winner Isidro Guity Guity from Costa Rica. This made the overstep even more annoying. “It’s actually something that shouldn’t happen to me as an athlete,” he complained. “It was a finger’s width. It wasn’t necessary at all. We were so far ahead. I shouldn’t have had to fight for every centimeter.”
Strictly: “Macabre”
At the finish he was delighted to win silver. “That’s pretty macabre, I was already celebrating,” said Streng. “And then came the disqualification, everything is gone. We put so much work into this year and now we’re leaving the stadium like this.”
Streng is now returning to his adopted home of England with a bronze medal in the 100 metres. In 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, he won gold and two bronze medals. In Tokyo three years ago, he won gold and silver.
