Parents were skeptical about Hollywood

US actress Winona Ryder says she is grateful to her parents for their earlier skepticism towards the film industry. “My parents – who are simply my best friends – were very suspicious of Hollywood,” the 52-year-old told fashion magazine “Another” about the beginnings of her acting career. “They associated it with the Judy Garland tragedy, and we never moved there.”

Judy Garland became famous at the age of 17 with her leading role in the classic film “The Wizard of Oz”. There are reports that she was given pills during filming to keep herself slim and fit. She later suffered from addiction problems and died at the age of 47 from an overdose of a sleeping pill.

Ryder rose to fame in 1988 with Tim Burton’s horror comedy “Beetlejuice.” At the time, she and her family lived near San Francisco, which is about a seven-hour drive from Los Angeles. Today, she sees her parents’ attitude as a “great gift,” Ryder explained. She knows many children for whom the move to Hollywood “didn’t turn out so well.” “I knew many children who had burnout.”
