Premier League: Man City with late 2-2 against Arsenal

The English football champions Manchester City fought to a 2:2 (1:2) draw against Arsenal FC in the top match of the Premier League in literally the last minute and thus defended their lead in the table. John Stones scored on Sunday in injury time (90th+8) and shortly before the final whistle for the hosts, who had been chasing a deficit for half a game despite being in the majority.

In the turbulent first half, Man City took an early lead through Erling Haaland (9th). For the former Dortmund player, it was the 100th goal in 105 games for the Cityzens. Riccardo Calafiori (22nd minute) and Gabriel (45th+1) turned the game in Arsenal’s favor shortly before half-time. Shortly afterwards, Leandro Trossard received his second yellow card for the still undefeated Londoners and was sent off.

City, with returning player Ilkay Gündogan, took control of the game in the second half, but despite having the advantage in numbers, they were unable to find a way to break through the defensively strong Gunners for a long time. In the last minutes of normal time, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya parried a shot from former Leipzig player Josko Gvardiol with a brilliant save. And then substitute Stones struck.

In the past two seasons, Man City, with coach Pep Guardiola, and Arsenal, with his former assistant Mikel Arteta on the sidelines, have been in a close race for the championship, with City coming out on top in both seasons. In the previous season, Arteta’s team was only two points away from the title.

Three expulsions in two minutes

Fabian Hürzeler remains unbeaten with his club Brighton & Hove Albion after the 2:2 draw against Nottingham Forest, but received his first red card in the Premier League. Emotions ran high after a rough tackle by Morgan Gibbs-White, who fouled Forest professional Pedro from behind and was shown a yellow-red card. While the former Pauli coach was sanctioned for demanding that Gibbs-White be sent off, his fellow coach Nuno Espirito Santo was shown a red card because he vehemently complained about this decision.
