Presence of dangerous metals prompts recall of children's rings sold on Amazon

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WKBN) — A set of children’s rings sold on Amazon is being recalled due to the presence of dangerous metals, according to health officials.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall of Newmemo Children’s Ring Sets due to high levels of lead and cadmium that exceed the maximum federal content levels allowed in children’s products.

“Lead and cadmium can be very harmful if ingested, especially for a young child,” said Dr. Debra Bogen, the Secretary of Health for Pennsylvania, in a news release. “Parents and caregivers should dispose of any rings and packaging of the set. Lead exposure, even at low levels, can affect brain development, lead to cognitive impairment, learning disability and behavior issues in children.”

The 36-pack of rings was sold exclusively on Amazon between January 2022 and March 2024. It came in multiple designs in a pink heart-shaped case. “Newmemo” and “Amazon FNSKU X0034COQMP” are written under the barcode attached to the underside of the case.

Roughly 2,200 sets are impacted, the CPSC said, and impacted consumers will be notified by Amazon and Newmemo. If you have any of these rings, you should immediately stop using them and contact the company for a full refund. According to the CPSC, you will be asked to throw away the jewelry and send a photo of it being disposed to [email protected].

No injuries have been reported because of these ring sets, but the Pennsylvania Department of Health said children who interacted with this product should be tested for lead and cadmium exposure.

Lead exposure, which can be especially harmful to young children, can cause difficulties in learning, growth interference, harm to hearing, developmental delays, coma, convulsions, and in serious cases, death.

Cadmium poisoning can lead to damage to the lungs and kidneys, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakening of bones. It has also been found to potentially cause cancer.
