“Problems arise when our habits do not match what we need”

Mr. Farb, we all know those moments when we seem to act completely automatically, without consciously thinking about it. How often does our brain run on autopilot?
We neuroscientists call this the “Default Mode Network”, or DMN for short – a network that includes several regions of the brain. It is activated when we do things habitually. When we are at home and want to pour ourselves a glass of water, we don’t have to think about every single step.
