France’s star footballer Kylian Mbappé has prevailed in the million-euro dispute over salary payments from his former club Paris Saint-Germain. The French league association has ordered PSG to pay Mbappé 55 million euros in back pay, which he claimed as outstanding salary before his move to Real Madrid, reported the sports newspaper “L’Équipe” and other French media.

In its ruling, the League Association’s Legal Commission (LFP) found that PSG had wrongfully failed to pay its former striker parts of his salary, which were set out in an additional agreement to his employment contract. The millions of euros demanded included the outstanding monthly salaries for April, May and June, the last third of a bonus payment for Mbappé’s previous contract extension and an “ethical bonus” for the last months of the contract.

PSG had relied on a verbal agreement, which is why the club believed it did not have to pay the sum. Mbappé, on the other hand, considered the verbal agreement to have not been fulfilled because his playing time had been drastically reduced after he announced his move to Madrid. The 2018 world champion moved to Champions League winners Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer after seven years in the PSG jersey.
