Qantas fined for selling thousands of canceled flight tickets

SYDNEY, OCT 8 – An Australian court today approved a fine against Qantas, the national airline, for selling thousands of canceled flight tickets.

Australia’s Federal Court has approved a 120 million Australian dollar (AUD) settlement between the national carrier and consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), over the ‘ghost flight’ controversy, reports Xinhua.

The ACCC commenced legal action against Qantas in November 2023, alleging the airline sold thousands of canceled flight tickets.

Both sides agreed to a settlement in May, and Federal Court Judge Helen Rofe today accepted a fine of AUD 100 million and compensation of AUD 20 million to customers as a deterrent against Qantas’ future non-compliance with consumer law.

According to the facts of the case agreed by the ACCC and Qantas, a total of 86,597 customers paid a total of AUD 17.9 million for canceled flight seats between May 2021 and August 2023. – Bernama
