Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal will not be stopping in Berlin on his farewell tour. “I am really disappointed to have to tell you that I will not be able to take part in the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” the Spaniard was quoted as saying on the event’s X-channel. The 38-year-old was supposed to be part of Team Europe at the Laver Cup. A replacement for the exceptional talent will be chosen soon, it was said.

The event, which pits a European team against a World team, will take place from September 20 to 22 in Berlin’s Uber Arena. Nadal was supposed to join the team coached by Björn Borg, which also includes Carlos Alcaraz and German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev.

Career ending likely soon

“This is a team competition. To really support Team Europe I would have to give my best, but at this moment there are other players who can help the team achieve victory,” said Nadal. He wishes the team good luck and will keep his fingers crossed from afar.

For Nadal, it is very likely to be his last year on the tour. The 22-time Grand Slam champion announced last year that his career would end in 2024. The Spaniard has been repeatedly set back by injuries. It is not known whether another injury is the reason for his absence in the German capital.
