In the promotion games to the 3rd football league at the end of the season, the champions of the Regionalliga Nordost were given home advantage in the first leg. As the DFB announced, the return leg will then take place at the champions of the Regionalliga Nord. The exact dates of the promotion games have yet to be determined by the DFB executive committee.
The regional league is divided into five divisions, from which only four regional league champions can advance. The champions of the West and Southwest regional leagues are always promoted automatically. A champion of the Bavaria, North and Northeast regional leagues is promoted directly in an alternating rotation, with the last place being determined in the promotion games.
This season, the champion of the Bavarian Regional League has a direct mandate for promotion; last season, Energie Cottbus was able to return directly to the 3rd division. In the coming season, the northern champion will be promoted to the higher division.
