NEW YORK — Ka, the independent Brooklyn rapper who was also a first responder during 9/11, has died. He was 52.
Ka, whose legal name is Kaseem Ryan, died “unexpectedly” on Oct. 12 in New York City, according to a statement shared on his social media accounts. A cause of death was not made available.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Kaseem Ryan (1972-2024), the rapper and producer known as Ka,” read a statement posted to Ka’s Instagram account on Monday.
“We kindly ask that the privacy of Ka’s family and loved ones be respected as they grieve this incalculable loss.”

Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, Ka began his music career in the early 1990s as a member of the group Natural Elements. After leaving Natural Elements, Ka teamed with fellow rapper Kev to form the duo Nightbreed.
Ka released his debut album, “Iron Works,” in 2008, marking the first of 11 independent albums – nine solo, two collaborative – that he released throughout his career. His most recent album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” was released in August.
Aside from his music career, Ka was a 20-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, which he joined in 1999. He served as a first responder during the World Trade Center terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and ultimately rose to the rank of captain for FDNY.
“Capt. Ryan served the FDNY and the people of the city of New York with distinction for 20 years, working assignments in both the Bronx and Brooklyn,” Fire Department spokesperson Jim Long told NBC News. “The Ryan family remains in our thoughts during their time of loss.”
Ka is survived by his wife, mother and sister, according to the statement shared on his social media accounts.
